The BRI microfinance Center (BMC) carries out research and consultancy in microfinance and micro, small, and medium-scale enterprises (MSMEs), actively participating in both domestic and international microfinance and MSME networks. Established by PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia, Tbk. (Bank BRI) in January 2019, BMC forms part of the Bank's commitment to support Indonesia's economic development through microfinance and by increasing the income and welfare of MSMEs and their associated households.
Since the 1980's, BRI's remarkable achievement in sustainable commercial microfinance - and its resulting financial performance - have drawn both domestic and International interest in studying how BRI conducts its core business.
As a result, BRI has become a benchmark for microfinance activities around the world. Both USAID, the United States Agency for International Development, and CGAP, the Consultative Group to assist the Poor, a consortium of international donor agencies including the World Bank, have recognized and supported BRI's efforts in conducting training and technical assistance as well as in receiving study visits from the international microfinance community.
After more than two decades of conducting these activities inside the Bank, in 2016 BRI created a separate entity known as the BRI Institute for Microfinance and Financial Inclusion (BRIIM). Most recently, the institute's name was shortened to the BRI Microfinance Center (BMC) while its scope of activity in support of the microfinance sector has been broadened.
To date, BMC and its predecessors has received more than 9,000 visitors from more than 50 countires for study visits, training, and technical assistance / consultancies in microfinance as well as micro, small, and medium-scale enterprise. Visitors have included chief executives of central banks and commercial banks, policymakers, investors, donor agency representatives, microfinance practitioners, and academics.
