BMC was established by Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) as part of the Bank's commitment in promoting and developing microfinance as well as micro, small, and medium-scale enterprises. BRI has been playing a prime role in serving those segments of the Indonesian economy for more than a century in Indonesia.
BRI is the oldest bank in Indonesia and was begun on 16 December 1895, when Raden Bei Aria Wiriaatmadja founded a small financial institution with the name of De Poerwokertosche Hulp-en Spaarbank der InlandscheHoofden. The Institution was a mosque-based association, whose function was to manage and disburse savings entrusted to it to the community in a very simple scheme.
Over the years, the institution went through several name changes and as it evolved with the surrounding condition. Finally in 1992 the official name of the institution became PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero), a limited-liability company. Through out this time, the Bank continued to focus on serving micro enterprises and low-income households and supported the government in helping the nation reach food self-sufficiency. In 1984, BRI launched rural general credit called KUPEDES, a pioneering commercial micro credit product at that time. Not long after that, in 1986, the Bank launched SIMPEDES, a savings product for rural people. Breaking with the paradigm believed at the time, Kupedes micro credit turned out to be successful in developing micro and small-scale enterprises in Indonesia while contributing to the Bank's profitability. To date, for more than one hundred twenty years, BRI has continued to develop its core business in sustainable microfinance.
In 2003, BRI became a publicly listed with 30% of its shares lised on Jakarta Stock Exchange (now Indonesia Stock Exchange/IDX) with the ticker code of BBRI. Currently, BBRI is part of the LQ45 equity index and is considered one of the blue chip shares in IDX.
